The shadow crossed the clearing twice before it landed. The wingspan is wider than most people expect -- wider than they believe until it folds. It stood on the carcass and looked at us for a long time. Not the way a large animal usually looks at something. It looked the way a person looks when they are deciding whether a situation is acceptable. We decided first and backed out of the tree line. It watched us go. I have been in the interior for eleven seasons and I have not seen anything else with that quality of attention.

Ecology
The Strikewing is the largest reliably documented aerial predator in the interior range. A breeding adult has a wingspan approaching fifteen feet and weighs enough that its landings leave visible compression marks in soft ground. It is not, despite its size, a slow or cautious hunter: the strike from altitude is one of the faster attack vectors in the fauna record, and the raptor grip that follows the initial impact is strong enough to carry prey up to medium human weight.
What distinguishes the Strikewing from other large aerial predators is a WIS-category aptitude that field researchers have struggled to describe precisely. The animal appears to model its environment at a higher resolution than its biology should support. It monitors thermals, tracks multiple potential prey simultaneously, assesses threat levels in ways that imply social and tactical understanding, and -- most unnerving to travelers who have been observed by one -- maintains attention on a specific target across long periods without the distraction breaks that other predators show. Whether this is a substrate-mediated enhancement or simply exceptional evolved cognition is an open question. The practical effect is a predator that does not make avoidable mistakes.
Strikewings are monogamous and territorial. A mated pair controls a large range and will actively drive out competitors, including other apex flyers. A pair near a settlement is a mixed condition: they suppress smaller aerial predators and do not typically prey on humans unless provoked or if carrion is scarce. They have been observed watching caravans for extended periods from altitude and then departing without striking. Whether this is threat assessment, curiosity, or something else is unknown.
Juveniles dispersing from the nest site are more dangerous than adults: they have the full physical capability of the species without the developed situational modeling, which means their threat assessment is less reliable and they will strike at targets that an adult would pass over.

Encounter use
A Strikewing attacking treats the approach as the commitment: it will not break off a dive unless something fundamentally changes the situation. The initial strike targets the largest or most exposed creature in the group. After the first strike, if the target is down or driven off, the animal reassesses -- it does not press a losing fight. Use the INT 8 and WIS 14 to play the creature as tactically thoughtful: it avoids the character with ranged capability, does not repeatedly close on a target that is effectively defending itself, and withdraws to altitude to reacquire rather than standing its ground. A grounded Strikewing (landed on prey or cornered) is more dangerous than one in the air because it loses the disengagement option.
Salvage
Primary flight feathers from an adult Strikewing are among the most reliable fletching materials in the interior -- the aerodynamic properties have been selectively optimized over a very long lineage and the shafts do not warp. Settlement fletchers pay well for intact primaries. The talons, particularly the rear hallux, are used as piercing tools in fine metalwork and as surgical implements. The eye tissue has the highest recorded visual-band sensitivity of any non-construct organism in the documented fauna range and is occasionally sought by Mages and Lattice researchers working on optical sensor arrays.
