Scrabble-Pack
Beast (Swarm) -- Medium -- Ruins, undercroft, grain stores, substrate-rich debris fields
The sound is what people remember. Not the biting -- the biting is fast and most people don't feel the individual bites until after. It's the sound: the dry chittering that doesn't come from any one direction, that seems to come from inside the walls and under the floor simultaneously. By the time you locate it the pack is already beneath you. The old-timers say you can tell a pack from scattered individuals because the sound is synchronized. They're right. It shouldn't be. It is.

Ecology
A Scrabble-Pack is not a species. It is a behavioral phenomenon: a sufficient density of small burrowing rodents in a high-Miasm environment, operating at a coordination threshold that individual specimens do not reach. The constituent animals vary by region -- the interior packs run mostly on a mid-sized rat lineage, the coastal packs on a shorter-tailed variety that can tolerate saltwater, and the deep-ruin packs on whatever small-bodied scavengers the local debris field supports. What they share is the synchronized movement that is the pack's defining characteristic and, for most people who have encountered one, its most disturbing quality.
The mechanism of coordination is a practical puzzle rather than a theoretical one. At low individual density the animals behave like normal rodents: opportunistic, scattered, noise-averse. At the pack threshold -- which field observation puts at roughly eighty to a hundred animals in close proximity in a high-Miasm zone -- the behavior shifts. Movement becomes synchronized within a fraction of a second across the whole mass. Retreat is executed as a unit. Attack is directed at the same target simultaneously. The most unsettling documented behavior is the pack's apparent capacity to route around obstacles in real time without any individual animal having line of sight on the obstacle: as if the swarm is navigating using a model of its environment that no single member of it could construct.
Scrabble-Packs nest in enclosed substrate-rich environments: the rubble of collapsed structures, grain stores with high organic debris, undercraft tunnels near Lattice nodes that generate residual heat. They are not aggressive toward large organisms by default. A pack that has been disturbed in a confined space -- particularly one that cannot exit -- is a different matter. In open terrain, a Scrabble-Pack that meets resistance will typically flow around the obstacle rather than press through it.
Settlement communities with recurring Scrabble-Pack pressure have developed a range of control methods, most involving disruption of the Miasm gradient in the nesting zone. The methods work at varying rates and none of them are permanent, because the animals themselves are not the problem -- the local Miasm conditions that enable the coordination threshold are the problem, and those persist long after the pack is gone.

Encounter use
Scrabble-Packs are most dangerous in enclosed spaces where the party cannot easily step back from the swarm. Use the synchronized movement as the unsettling element: the pack does not behave like animals, it behaves like a single organism with many bodies. Area effects are the primary counter; a character trying to fight a swarm with a sword is doing less than they think. A pack that takes significant damage retreats and reconstitutes -- the animals that flee are fine individually and will regroup if conditions remain favorable. The best outcome is collapsing the nesting zone or disrupting the local Miasm gradient, not killing every individual animal.
Salvage
Nothing recoverable from the animals themselves. The nesting zone, however, often contains compressed debris layers with recoverable Lattice fragments and pre-Forgetting artifacts. The pack's nanite-threshold behavior means it tends to cluster around substrate-rich material, which makes active Scrabble-Pack nests a reliable if hazardous indicator of embedded relic density. A World Master running a nest-clearing encounter can seed the debris field with appropriate finds.
