The water was clear enough to see the bottom and we had been crossing for ten minutes when Orets pointed. There were three of them moving in the same direction we were, at the same pace, about twelve feet to the left. They were not circling. They were just going the same way. We reached the far bank and they turned and went back the way they had come. The guide said they do this. He said when they stop pacing you and start circling, you have a different problem.

Ecology
The Bladefin is a medium-bodied aquatic predator common in coastal shallows, river mouths, and any body of water deep enough to swim in but shallow enough to push fish and smaller prey into corners. The name comes from the dorsal fin, which has a distinctively sharp anterior edge -- not a defensive feature but a hydrodynamic one, the leading surface of a fin optimized for rapid course changes in confined water. In practice, the fin visible above the waterline is the most reliable early warning the species provides.
Bladefins are opportunistic and semi-social. They do not school in the coordinated sense of smaller fish, but they are aware of each other's hunting behavior and will move toward the stimulus of a successful strike by another individual. A lone Bladefin is a manageable hazard; three or four in the same body of water responding to the same blood-signal is a different encounter. The Pack Tactics that their behavioral record demonstrates is emergent rather than coordinated: each animal is simply taking advantage of the distraction the others create.
They are not exclusively saltwater animals -- Bladefins in river populations have adapted to freshwater without apparent difficulty, and the coastal populations move freely between salt and fresh through tidal channels. This range makes them the most common large aquatic predator in the interior water network, present in systems that other marine fauna cannot reach.
The Blindsight range -- the pressure-sensing lateral line that detects water displacement -- operates effectively in turbid conditions where visual detection would fail entirely. A Bladefin in murky floodwater has a significant sensor advantage over anything that relies on vision to navigate.

Encounter use
The Bladefin encounter is about water crossings and how much noise the party makes. A single Bladefin in a crossing zone is low threat -- manageable for any combat-capable group if they notice it. Three attracted by blood or thrashing is a meaningful hazard for anyone in the water. Run the Pack Tactics to reward players who stay calm and move efficiently; punish thrashing. Characters who take damage in the water are immediately more attractive targets for any additional Bladefins within Blindsight range. A party that kills one quickly and crosses cleanly faces no further pressure; a party that fights in the water while wounded is inviting escalation.
Salvage
Bladefin hide makes serviceable light armor material for aquatic environments -- the skin's texture and oil content provides some water resistance that standard leather does not. The lateral-line tissue, if extracted carefully, is studied by researchers working on pressure-detection applications in Lattice sensor systems. Coastal settlements that regularly harvest Bladefins have developed a small trade in the dried fins, which are used as abrasive tools for finishing metalwork and treated wood.
