The first sign is the smell -- something between hot metal and old leaves -- and then, if the space is dark enough to read it, a deep amber glow from inside the wall cavity. Not flame. Steadier than flame. Moving with the animal, not with air currents. By the time you can smell it clearly you are already close enough that it knows you are there. It does not flee immediately. It assesses. The glow dims slightly while it does, which I was not told to expect.

Ecology
The Ashbeetle is a small armored scavenger-omnivore that has adapted to a specific niche: enclosed, substrate-warm environments with high organic content and low light. It is not dangerous in the conventional sense -- its mandibles are not designed for large prey and it does not pursue threats. What makes it notable, and what causes the encounters in the field record, is the bioluminescent gland beneath the abdomen that gives it its name. The glow is a deep amber-orange that the animal can modulate in both intensity and pulse rhythm. The control is not reflexive: Ashbeetles actively dim their glow when they detect vibration, brighten when assessing a potential food source, and produce a rapid irregular pulse pattern that field researchers interpret as alarm behavior.
The luminescence is substrate-mediated. The gland contains a dense concentration of nanites that interact with the animal's metabolic byproducts to produce light at a specific emission frequency. This means the glow responds to Miasm density gradients: in exceptionally high-saturation zones, Ashbeetles glow visibly in daylight. In substrate-dead zones, the glow extinguishes entirely. Settlement communities have used this as a passive indicator system for generations -- an Ashbeetle that has stopped glowing is telling you something about the local conditions whether it intends to or not.
They are colony animals in loose terms: they do not maintain organized social structures, but where one Ashbeetle is found in a suitable environment, more are usually nearby. A dark, warm, debris-rich ruin corridor with a single Ashbeetle is a corridor that probably has thirty.
They will bite if handled, cornered, or stepped on. The bite is trivial against any armored creature but capable of breaking skin. Their primary defensive response is to dim their glow and remain still, which in their preferred habitat -- dark spaces full of angular debris -- makes them effectively invisible to anything relying on vision.

Bite
Encounter use
Ashbeetles are not combat encounters -- they are environmental information. A corridor that suddenly goes dark because the Ashbeetle colony suppressed its glow is telling the players something moved through it. A chamber where the beetles are glowing at double their usual intensity is in a high-Miasm zone; whatever lives here is fed by that density. A single Ashbeetle that has wandered into a lit room and is actively dimming and brightening its glow in irregular pulses is alarmed about something nearby. Use them as passive substrate sensors the players can learn to read. In the rare case where the players disturb a large colony in an enclosed space -- stepping through a floor cavity dense with them, breaking a wall into a nest -- treat it as a swarm using Scrabble-Pack statistics with the Bioluminescence trait added.
Salvage
A live Ashbeetle in a sealed container is a functional light source that can be dimmed on command and that responds to local Miasm conditions -- the settlement communities that use them have developed small perforated clay vessels specifically for this purpose. The gland tissue harvested from a dead specimen retains some bioluminescent capacity for several hours and is used in low-light marking applications. Researchers studying substrate-density mapping find Ashbeetle colonies useful as distributed passive sensors: a colony map of a ruin complex is an approximate Miasm density map of the same complex.
