It had been in the current for most of an hour before I understood what I was looking at. The color was wrong -- not the brown of the river bears to the south, but grey, almost silver where the light caught the shoulders. It stood when it came out. A person would have been at chest height. It looked at the camp the way something looks when it is deciding, not when it is afraid. Then it walked back into the water and was gone, and we broke camp anyway because none of us wanted to be there when it finished deciding.

Ecology

The Ashbear is the common name for a large ursine predator-omnivore found throughout the river corridors and old-growth uplands of the interior. The pale grey coloration that gives the animal its name is a product of nanite accumulation in the keratin of the fur follicles -- an effect that appears across several large-bodied lineages that have spent enough generations in elevated Miasm zones. The grey is progressive; an Ashbear in its prime is noticeably lighter than a juvenile, and a very old animal can appear almost white in overcast light.

Ashbears are solitary except during the brief pairing season and the longer period when a mother is raising cubs. The home range is large and marked, and mature adults respect each other's boundaries with a consistency that suggests the marking system carries more information than simple scent -- measurements taken near active Ashbear territory show subtle Miasm density variations at boundary points that do not appear in comparable non-marked terrain. Whether the animal is reading these variations consciously is not a useful question; it behaves as though it is.

They are omnivores in the technical sense but generalist predators in practice. The Ashbear's metabolism is unusually efficient, which means a large animal can sustain itself on less than other predators its size require. This efficiency also means it can afford to be opportunistic -- it will take a kill of opportunity, including a poorly-equipped traveler or a badly-run camp, without necessarily being hungry.

An Ashbear that has identified a camp as a reliable food source is one of the more tractable problems in the interior, because the fix is simple: do not be a reliable food source. An Ashbear that has been wounded or cornered is a different matter entirely. The CON surplus that makes the animal so durable in foraging conditions applies just as directly to absorbing damage. Settlements near active Ashbear range teach their children the difference between a bear that is curious and a bear that has already made a decision.

Encounter use

An Ashbear encountered in the open is almost certainly aware of the party before they are aware of it, and has already made its assessment. Use the animal's decision-making as the scene: is it leaving, watching, or approaching? A bear in its own territory near food or cubs will not retreat. One caught at a distance from both will. At close range, its preferred tactic is to close fast, knock the largest threat prone with a Claw attack, and continue from there. It does not disengage while it is winning.

Salvage

Ashbear hide is dense and weather-resistant; a skilled tanner can produce functional medium-armor-weight material from an adult pelt, though the process is slow and the result is heavy. The nanite-dense fur itself has some value to substrate researchers as a passive accumulation sample. Gall and liver tissue from an Ashbear raised in particularly high-Miasm zones occasionally shows anomalous cellular structures that Sages use as a teaching specimen for discussions of long-term nanite integration in large-bodied fauna.
